Conversation Starters 

At the KV Foundation, we know that the simplest question can open doors. Our conversation starters are intended to happen anywhere and specifically on one of our KV community benches to guide you to tools, conversation starters, and exercises to help prioritize mental health both for yourself and for the people around you. 

Every check-in counts, and every conversation matters.

Conversation Starters

​Use these to open gentle, meaningful dialogue:

  • “you good?” and listen without trying to fix anything.

  • “What’s been on your mind this week?”

  • “I noticed you seemed [pause]… do you want to talk about it?”

  • “What helps you feel grounded or supported?”

  • “If you could have one kind thing happen today, what would it be?”

Breathing & Grounding Exercises

In the meantime, use these breathing exercises as a way to reset and reconnect:

4-7-8 Breathing

  • Inhale for 4 counts

  • Hold for 7 counts

  • Exhale for 8 counts

  • Repeat 3–5 times

Box Breathing

  • Inhale for 4 counts

  • Hold for 4 counts

  • Exhale for 4 counts

  • Pause for 4 counts

  • Repeat 3–5 cycles

Grounding Scan

  • Name 5 things you can see

  • Name 4 things you can touch

  • Name 3 things you can hear

  • Name 2 things you can smell

  • Name 1 thing you can taste

Quick Check-In

  • Rate your stress on a scale from 1–10

  • Identify one small action that can reduce stress

  • Take a deep breath and start with that step

Other Actions You Can Take

  • Reach out to someone and share a genuine check-in

  • Offer resources like 988, 211, or local support groups

  • Invite a friend to join a community walk or discussion

  • Share a story or resource via social media using #yougoodKV
